Food photography

A food-photography guide to light direction, styling decisions, texture and choosing a useful viewpoint.

Food photography depends on how light describes surface and shape. Before adding props, examine the food itself: a glossy sauce, a crisp edge and a soft crumb each respond differently to the direction of light.

Make the viewpoint serve the dish

A low angle can reveal height and layers; an overhead view can organize several elements on a table. Try both before choosing. Move distracting utensils or bright objects only when doing so improves the balance rather than making the setting feel arbitrary.

Work through a simple sequence: one overall arrangement, one serving-size view and one texture detail. Keep colour consistent between the frames so the series reads as one meal or subject study.
