AirlinePictures: photography notes and practical guidance on aviation photography.

Aircraft photography combines recognizable shapes with movement and often difficult distances. A good viewing exercise is to compare an aircraft isolated against the sky with one placed in an airport or landscape setting.

Give movement a direction

Watch the space around the nose, wings and tail. Decide whether an image needs room to travel into or whether a close geometric crop is the point. A panning experiment can describe motion differently from a very short exposure.

Work only from permitted viewing areas and follow local access rules. Plan for changing light and use a stable, comfortable stance rather than moving toward restricted or unsafe positions.
