An antique-camera study can examine the object as both a working mechanism and a piece of photographic design. Begin by recording the maker’s markings and visible controls without forcing unfamiliar parts.
Inspect before operating
Look at the condition of the body, bellows where present, glass surfaces and film compartment. Check which film or plate format the camera uses before assuming a modern material will fit. A camera intended for display and one intended for use need different levels of examination.
For photographs of the object itself, use gentle side light to reveal texture and make detail frames of labels and mechanisms. Avoid aggressive cleaning that could damage finishes or markings.
