GalleryCarré

GalleryCarré: photography notes and practical guidance on galleries & presentation.

A gallery presentation gives photographs a shared space. The size of images, the amount of surrounding space and the sequence of works shape how the viewer moves between pictures.

Study the transitions

Look at two neighbouring photographs as a pair. Do their shapes, colours or subjects create a conversation? Then inspect the next transition. A sequence can build momentum through similarity or introduce a purposeful pause through contrast.

When arranging your own small gallery, begin with a limited selection and vary only one part of the presentation at a time. Keep captions consistent so that layout supports the work rather than competing with it.
