Light & colour studies

Golden Image

Golden Image: photography notes and practical guidance on light & colour studies.

Warm light can unify a photograph, but colour alone does not create structure. Notice how highlights, shadows and the placement of the subject work together before deciding that the light is successful.

Keep warmth under control

Compare the brightest parts of the frame with neutral objects and skin tones where present. Decide whether the overall warmth supports the subject or hides important colour differences. A carefully chosen white balance can preserve the mood without making every tone identical.

Make a short study as the light changes. Keep the framing steady for a few images, then compare how the direction and softness of light alter the same scene.
