Steve Hall

A photographer portfolio reading guide centred on captions, attribution and separating visual observation from interpretation.

Names and captions provide context, but they should be read alongside the photograph. For a portfolio credited to Steve Hall, first record what is plainly visible: objects, spatial relationships, light and any readable text. Then read the caption and notice which parts of your interpretation change. A caption can identify a subject without explaining every decision within the frame.

Keep observations and inferences in separate notes. A photograph may suggest a mood or event, but suggestion alone does not establish the circumstances of its production. When making a personal reference list, retain the displayed image title, credit and project heading together. This gives you a clearer basis for discussing the work and a more precise way to locate it again.
