Texture can be communicated through light, contrast and the relationship between sharp and soft areas. In photographs attributed to Bob Kolb, examine where surfaces appear rough, smooth, reflective or translucent. Look for the visible clues behind that impression. A change in tone may suggest a material, but an online image rarely proves what that material is.
View the full composition before inspecting detail. Ask whether texture supports the main arrangement or becomes the subject of your attention. Compression and sharpening can change the appearance of small details, so avoid technical judgements based solely on a small preview. Describe relative differences within the frame and keep uncertainty visible in your notes rather than filling it with a guessed production method.
