Inspect the boundaries of an image before its centre. Look for bright distractions, clipped shapes and lines entering from a corner. A small change of position can improve these relationships without altering the subject.
A practical viewing exercise
Make one frame with generous space and one tighter version. Compare what each includes and what each asks the viewer to infer. Keep the version whose boundaries support the subject most clearly.
