An effective series does not require every photograph to stand alone in the same way. When looking at a series under the name Stefan Tarzan, identify frames that introduce information, connect ideas or shift emphasis. A quieter image may do essential work between two striking ones. Evaluate its contribution to the sequence before deciding that it is less successful.
Select one frame and consider the group with that frame temporarily omitted in your mind. What becomes harder to understand or feel? Then look at the photograph by itself and record a different kind of response. Comparing these two readings helps distinguish the demands of a series from those of a standalone picture, without making unsupported claims about the author's goals.
