An apparently empty area can be an active part of a photograph. In a portfolio identified by the name Xu Fai, look at the space around the main forms as carefully as the forms themselves. Is that space uniform, textured, dark or bright? Its boundaries may direct attention, create breathing room or make the visible subject feel isolated within the frame.
Describe the outline of the surrounding space in one selected image, then compare it with the outline of the subject. This reversal can reveal relationships you missed on a first viewing. Avoid assuming that a simple composition was simple to make. Evaluate the visible result and the role of each area, while leaving production decisions to any accompanying explanation provided with the work.
